My A-level grades are strong — why do I find STEP so hard?

Because it's designed that way. STEP tests reasoning on unfamiliar ground, not execution of practised methods. Finding it hard is the shared experience of nearly everyone who later does well; unguided students just have no way of knowing that.

STEP is the examination that turns Cambridge mathematics offers — and some Warwick and Imperial ones — into places, and it is deliberately unlike A-level. A-level rewards fluent execution of known methods; STEP hands you an unfamiliar problem and watches you reason for forty minutes.

Most strong A-level mathematicians find their first STEP paper humbling. That's normal, it's the point, and it's why preparation with someone who has been through it changes outcomes so sharply.

What STEP actually demands

STEP 2 and STEP 3 problems are long, multi-part and proof-flavoured: they reward persistence, technique selection and mathematical honesty about what you've actually shown. The grading rewards depth over coverage — full solutions to fewer questions beat fragments of many. Learning to choose your questions, commit, and write mathematics that earns marks is half the preparation.

The preparation arc that works

Successful STEP candidates typically start in the autumn of Year 13 (or the summer before): first building problem-solving stamina on accessible past questions, then working full papers under time from spring, with every attempt reviewed properly — not just checked against solutions, but interrogated for where the reasoning stalled. The psychological game

STEP sits in June, alongside A-levels, with an offer riding on it — pressure that derails well-prepared students. Tutors who sat STEP themselves teach the meta-skills: what a normal amount of struggle feels like, when to abandon a question, and how to bank partial credit without spiralling. Familiarity is the antidote to panic.
